Presentation Practice Center

I worked at my college as a Tutor for the Presentation Practice Center. As a tutor I helped students with their presentations. I would help them brainstorm ideas of what to speak about and I would also critique their presentation.

As a tutor one of my responsibilities was to help the Social Media Committee. This semester I was put in charge of posting on our Facebook page the Tutor Highlight of the week. In order to do this I had to collect all of the tutor’s bios and a picture that they wanted posted on our Facebook page.

Another assignment I had was to write a blog. I was able to choose the topic. As a tutor we see a lot of the same problem. Some of those problems include: formatting/organization of speech, filler word usage and the lack of understanding between an informative speech and a persuasive speech. Below is a link that will take you to the blog post that I wrote.

Comm 273: Presenting Tip 3 for NYLT

The Conclusion, this is the last chance you have to make an impression on the other youth. What do you want them to remember? What do you think is the most important thing for the audience to take away from your presentation? Some people like to end with a call to action. This can help the audience to see that you care about them. A call to action gives the audience a challenge and something to work on. For your NYLT presentation, it is perfectly acceptable to have your call to action related to the troops and the crews. Remember your conclusion should also include a landing line. The audience should not feel like there is still more to the presentation. They should feel like it is actually over. The conclusion is important because it is the last chance you have to impress the audience.

Comm 273: Presenting Tip 2 for NYLT

Whenever you present something, remember to be who you are. From what I have noticed from my speaking classes and from what I have seen at work, the best presentations are the ones where the presenters are being themselves. Generally when people are being themselves, the audience will pay more attention due to the audience and the presenter feeling comfortable. Think about this, when you feel comfortable with the person speaking, you tend to feel more comfortable with participating, right? Well as you go about preparing for your NYLT presentations; remember what helps you feel comfortable enough to participate. Now think about what you can do in order to help the audience feel more comfortable. For NYLT, songs are always a great idea. You can also invite people to share their personal stories by you sharing your stories. Also, get to know your audience before you actually present.

Comm 273: Presenting Tip 1 for NYLT

The introduction, this is the moment that will set the tone of your presentation. Think about this, how can you get the audience to pay attention? How can you help give the audience a reason to stay awake? You can set the tone for your presentation by being energetic. This will help the audience to see that you want to have a good presentation and that you want people to pay attention to what you are saying. This will also help people to gain a good attitude about being in the audience. Show us your personality, show us who you are. This will help people to pay attention to you and what you are saying. The introduction sets the tone for the whole presentation. What tone do you want to set for the other youth?

Comm 273: Teleprompter Speech (Final)

Preparing for Personal Revelation:

Intro:

President Spencer W. Kimball once said…God reveals himself to [people] who are prepared for such manifestations. These revelations as we call them and as defined by the Bible dictionary means…to make known or uncover something. Revelations are important because they make it possible for us to receive answers from our Heavenly Father. However, we cannot just pray and receive an answer.

Body:

In order to prepare for personal revelation we need to actively be seeking the answers to the questions we have. According to Elder L. Lionel Kendrick in order To properly prepare to receive personal revelation… we must repent…ask through prayer…be obedient… search the scriptures… fast… think pure thoughts… and develop a spirit of reverence.

By repenting we are showing Heavenly Father that we are meek and have a lowliness of heart. In order to repent we need to turn toward God and away from evil. By doing this we can succumb to a mighty change. Repentance can be hard… but we need to remember that we are never alone and we always have a support system. Our support system might be our earthly family or friends but it can also be Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. All sins need to be confessed to the Lord. However, some sins may need to be confessed to a Church official. Once we repent the Holy Ghost sees that we are more willing to open our hearts to listen to Him.

Asking our Heavenly Father through prayer opens the lines of communication. By opening up this line of communication Heavenly Father then notices that we are actively seeking to find answers. Heavenly Father has an open door policy. This means He is always ready to listen to us. When we have a question for the Lord we need to express our desire for the answer.

If we are obedient we are showing Heavenly Father that He can trust us with the mysteries of His kingdom. I believe when Heavenly Father feels like He can trust us… the bond between you and Heavenly Father will be strengthened. When this occurs we as individuals feel we can do more things. Some of these things may test us and push us…but the Lord knows we can do it.

As we are reading the scriptures we must actively search. Our minds need to be engaged. We cannot just simply read the scriptures to say we are reading the scriptures. We need to read the scriptures because we want to learn. But what does it mean to search the scriptures? Clayton Christensen describes in his book…The Power of the Everyday Missionary… one way to search the scriptures. He states… Pray… Read… Write… Pray. Before we start any scripture study, it is a good idea to pray. In our prayer we need to make sure to ask any questions that we have. As we read the scriptures we need to write down any answers to our questions. We then need to pray about the answers we received.

Once you think you have found an answer…it is a great idea to fast. By fasting the Lord will manifest unto us the truth we need by the power of the Holy Ghost. This will then give us the “Spirit of Revelation”. We see examples of this throughout the scriptures. One example is when Jesus fasted before he started his earthly ministry. He did this to know of the will of His Father in order to help glorify God. Not everyone can fast food and water.

In order to have a clearer channel of communication, we need to make sure we are thinking pure thoughts. If we have worldly matters and impure thoughts in our head then it is harder for us to listen to the Lord. It is also harder to decipher who is talking to us. Impure thoughts in the mind create a traffic jam of sorts. Your brain wants you to think several things… where as your heart and soul needs you to focus on your questions.

Earlier I mentioned the Spirit of Reverence. To receive revelation…we must develop a spirit of reverence. Elder Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles once counseled… Inspiration comes more easily in peaceful settings. He added…Irreverence suits the purposes of the adversary by obstructing the delicate channels of revelation in both mind and spirit… and … Reverence invites revelation…. Irreverence makes it harder for the Spirit to teach us. We need to recognize that what the Lord reveals to us IS sacred.

Conclusion:

One of my favorite music artists is Jenny Jordan Frogley. In her song called… Standing in the Rain…. She mentions that sometimes when you are trying to decide what to do it feels like we are standing in the rain. When we feel like we are standing in the rain it is almost like we have given up… but Frogley points out that we always have a light. That light is Christ. Even when we feel like we are alone and everything is hopeless… it is not.  I encourage you as you are trying to decide what to do with your life to seek guidance from the Lord. He knows what we need. He can and will help guide us…if we follow the steps that Elder L. Lionel Kendrick gave. Those steps are…To properly prepare to receive personal revelation… we must repent…ask through prayer…be obedient… search the scriptures… fast… think pure thoughts… and develop a spirit of reverence. I like to say these things in the name of Jesus Christ… Amen.

Stand Alone Presentation

This presentation is to help promote Venturing. For class I needed to create a presentation that does not require anyone speaking for. I decided to do this presentation on what I am passionate about and what I already had pictures for. I am very proud of this video and I am so thankful for the Presentation Practice Center and the advice they gave me.

*The pictures were taken by Angie Winterton, Ryan Mitchell, and Brian Parker. The music is from http://www.bensound.com/

Comm 273: Informative Speech

Introduction:

For this speech I need one volunteer to stand right here and assist me. Thank you for volunteering. For now, you can just stand here and look pretty. 😉 For this speech I am going to teach you about the EDGE Method. Has anyone heard of this method?

Perfect, today I am going to teach you what the EDGE method stands for and how to use this method.

Body:

E stands for explain. During this stage of the EDGE method, one simple states how to do something. For instance, I am going to teach one person how to tie a figure 8 knot. In order to tie a figure 8 knot, we will fold a section of the rope in half. Next we will twist the rope twice. Once the rope is twisted, we will take one of the ends of the rope and pull it threw the circle on top. We now have figure 8 knot.

D stands for demonstrate. Now I will actually use a piece of rope and show you how to tie the knot. Thus, parental stress associated with unstable care arrangements and work-related troubles in arranging child care may increase a risk of child maltreatment.

G stands for Guide. I will now help  _____ tie the Figure 8 knot.

E stands for enable. Now, ___ is able to teach others how to tie this knot and I do not have to help him or her to tie this knot.

Conclusion:

The EDGE method is something we learn to use in the Scouting world. I have come to love this method. The EDGE Method is a great way to teach others to do something.

Professional Presentations: Experience Speech

Due 1/21/16

Introduction: Raise your hand if you ever had a hobby that you absolutely loved? Thinking about that hobby, what if someone told you to quite that hobby?

Body: When I was 15 I had this happen to me. You see, I am not like most Georgia Females. Most of the females I went to High School with were into Sports like Cheerleading, Soccer, and Volleyball. But I was not really interested in those sports. I was interested in being in the outdoors doing activities like hiking, climbing, and shooting. In order to do these activities, I joined Venturing, which is the Co-ed Side of Boy Scouts of America. Some people had a hard time accepting my love of the scouting program.

I actually had someone from church try to convince my mom to make me stop doing what I loved. When I heard about this, my heart broke. I had a hard time understanding how someone that called me, “her” scout, felt like I needed to quite what I loved and what made me different. If someone told you to quite your hobby, would you quite? I couldn’t quite. Scouting is what makes me different. Scouting helped me figure out who I actually am. For instance, when I first joined scouting, I would have never been able to speak to a group of 3,000 people, but scouting showed me that I can speak in front of large groups. Without Scouting, I would not have had the amazing opportunities I have had. For instance, I was able to show the scouts in my area what females in the scouting world can accomplish. I was the first female in my scouting area to do a lot of things, like being the Course Leader of a youth training course. Without scouting, I would have never become an Ambassador for the National Rifle Association.

Conclusion: Hobbies help define who we are. They help us to find ourselves and they help others to see who we really are. We need to follow our hearts because if we don’t then we will lose ourselves.

Project 9: Portfolio

Project Corrections / Time spent: Instead of doing project corrections, I decided to create a new project. It took me 2 hours to create this new project. This project can be found at the end of my portfolio and it consists of 3 montages.

Message: Is to show my ability in regards to creating visual pieces while using the Adobe Products as well as using Microsoft Word to my future employers.

Audience: Future Employers

Top Thing Learned: From creating this Portfolio I learned that it is better to add onto a portfolio over time rather than create a portfolio after 3 months of creating work.

Future application of Visual Media: I plan on using the knowledge that I learned this semester at family gatherings and on projects I have. For instance, I will always be thinking about what colors match and what colors do not match. This will help for matching family pictures and it will help with my PowerPoint designs.

Color scheme and color names: Split Complementary with Teal and Brick
